Are you a professional homemaker?

Unlike any other profession, it took me sometime to understand that my experience counts as a homemaker too.

The progression from a small town girl to the corporate world of the metro cities was a big jump in itself. The feeling was inexplicable although the journey was full of bumpy hurdles. With every appraisal I felt like a conqueror that never yielded in the face of pressure from her bosses and of course the stringent company policies that keep changing keeping in line with client expectations. I boasted of having been through everything in life until I knew that “everything” is a mystery and unravels itself when you least expect it.

Gone were the days of reporting to work on time with no fixed time to clock out. Now I was the master of it all and worked at my own pace. I wore multiple hats now, like that of a Chef, a housekeeper, a mother and a wife. Team management included managing the team of a driver, housemaids and a gardener. It was all hunky dory until the time another realization struck me. I wasn’t getting paid for being on my toes throughout the day without any weekly offs! That wasn’t a good feeling at all. But as the cliché goes “everything happens for a reason”…

It was hard but I started looking for the reason … and stopped asking the “why me?”. I found the answer to it already…. “Because I asked for it”

Well the reason why it was happening to me seemed to be quite simple. Perhaps, my purpose in life was much bigger than what I was doing.

While I was trying to sort things out in my head, I realized that I was getting better at being a homemaker. I was no more ashamed of declaring this primary profession in social introductions and gatherings. This is the only selfless profession in the world where you think about others just the way you think about yourself. It teaches you to be wiser and more mature.

Homemaker is a relatively new terminology yet is synonymous with the words “housewife” and “househusband” (considered to be derogatory in our society).

Why invent a new word without a progressive advancement to its meaning? Perhaps, they just needed a word to describe the role irrespective of the sexes.

Well, I would like to redefine the word homemaker by saying – “it’s a person who prioritizes smooth functioning of the household and the family, over any other business”. There are several women who contribute to the community through their work in addition to being a homemaker…So why introduce them with their secondary profession?
